Fort Stevens 2014

During the weekend of 14-17 Aug 2014, Friends of Willie and Joe again occupied the open area near Battery Pratt.

Troops started arriving and setting up camp on Thursday and by Friday evening we had an impressive gathering of 8 tents and 28 Friends.  The weather was reasonable and the visitors were fairly constant on Saturday.

On Saturday, we were visited by a WW2 veteran, a BAR gunner from the 180th Infantry Regiment, 45th Division. We were all pleased to have an opportunity to talk with and listen to him.

After the visitors left and a shared dinner with Oregon Military Vehicle Club, the USO came in for a movie night. There was a couple of short propaganda films followed by the main feature – This is Army (1943).

During the afternoon, the group presented a demonstration on how to reduce a bunker. During the demonstration, a member of the raiding party became a casualty and the Battalion Aid Station took over with their own demonstration. Both events were well received by a group of 30 visitors.

Breakfast was prepared each morning using the Field Ranges and a yellow cake cooked for Saturday’s dinner.
